Totals to Date & Monthly Bills
Below the bill list are two summary views. They answer different questions, and it's easy to read one expecting the answer to the other.
Totals To Date
Totals To Date is cumulative progress across your budget so far — the running total of what you've actually completed since the plan started.
This is your "am I where I should be" number. It's not about the current paycheck; it's about the whole run of the plan up to now. Because it counts completed bills, it only reflects reality if you've been marking things off. A gap here usually means missed marking rather than missed payments.
Use it to check drift. Small variances even out. A widening gap between what the plan projected and what you've actually completed means the plan isn't matching your life, and it's worth revisiting the inputs rather than pushing through. See Editing & Rebuilding a Budget.
Monthly Bills
Monthly Bills steps back from the pay period to the calendar month.
Paycheck-level detail is the right unit for acting — it tells you what to do this Friday. But some things only make sense monthly. Your landlord thinks in months. So does your insurer, and so will you when someone asks what you spend on bills.
This view rolls the pay periods up so you can see the month as a whole, including months where an extra paycheck falls and the picture looks unusually good.
Which to use when
Working through a paycheck → the bill list itself.
Checking whether you're on track overall → Totals To Date.
Answering "what do I spend a month" → Monthly Bills.
Looking for trends over time → neither; that's the Dashboard.
They only count what you complete
Both views are built from bills you've marked complete. An unmarked bill you did pay is invisible to them.
This is the practical argument for marking bills as you pay them. The summaries aren't independent bookkeeping — they're a readout of what you told the app. Keep the marking current and they're accurate; let it slide and they'll quietly understate you.
